Virgin R.U.N. to Mersing (Brokeback Style)

i've gotten the pre-ride-pre-briefing note from Maz (the man) regarding our Ride-Up-North.

Date: 7.7.07
Meeting time: 1430
Meeting place: TBA

Itinerary:
(timing dependent on how swift the group moves)

Day 1
1430: Gather at designated meeting point. Pre-ride check and briefing.
1515: Move off to JB. Top up fuel at Shell and prepare for ride.

1600: Start of first leg of ride. (depending on traffic and weather we should clear this part around 1 and a half hour)
1730: Pit stop for butt stretching, toilet break, drinks, makan.

1815: Second leg of the trip. Roughly about 78km. time abt 1.5hours. The second leg is where all the twisty roads is.
1945: Arrive at Mersing town. Stop at Esso to top up petrol and head off for dinner.

2100: Move to Air Papan where we will spent our night. 15.5 km from Mersing town. Sleeping by the beach at Air Papan. 5 rm/pax.

Day 2
R&R at Air Papan.

Set off for Singapore at around 11.
Stop at Mersing town to top-up fuel.
Travelling time and number of stops simillar to Day 1.
Estimated arrival time at Woodlands will be 7 (latest).

Pre-Ride Checks:
  1. To minimise breakdown along the way, you are advised to service your bikes beforehand. Clutch cable, engine oil, spark plugs. If need be, brake pads too.
  2. Do ensure that your tyres are in acceptable conditions, change if it's balding.
  3. Ensure exaust bolts are tighten. A loose exhaust bolt will make the bike vibrate tremendously and hence, the likelihood of things dropping off your bike and your comfort.
  4. Check cables in good condition.
  5. Healthy plug.
  6. Tire pressure is correct. Slightly softer pressure then normal city ride.
  7. Working taillight.
  8. Headlight should be bright enough 'cause part of the ride is at dusk.

Feel free to add any other information.

Things To Bring:
  • Passport
  • Money (60rm is sufficent to get u in and out, but extra also no harm.)
  • Gloves
  • Riding jacket
  • Rain coat
  • Certificate of bike insurance (photocopy will do)
  • The rest is all up to u

Group Inventory:
  • Coil
  • Oil seal. (Unsure about this. 'cause i not sure when was the last time u all had an oil seal change)
  • Spark Plugs
  • Cables plus jam nut
  • Tents
  • Tubes

Safety Concerns (Riding In Trunk Roads):
  • Do not overtake the lead bike or drop behind the sweeper.
  • Remain in a single file at all times. (Staggered formation for city-riding)
  • Keep a safe distance from each other. Make sure the front and back rider is visible to you. This is your own responsibility so that there will not be much stoppagges during the ride.
  • Always check your mirrors for any vehicles overtaking you. Give way to overtaking cars. If need be move into the emergency lane.
  • Ride within your capability. If you deem dangerous or scared, do exercise your common sense.
  • Overtaking can be done on the right or left depending on situation.
  • Obey the road signs. Especially bridge signs, twisted roads, animal crossing.
  • More to be updated during pre-ride briefing

Others:

Some of you might be concerned about part of the ride is in the dark. Let me clarify. The main reason is the eating place is in town and not at Air Papan. If we were to reach Air Papan early and set up tent and go for dinner, who will take care of them?

So we'll reach there just in time for dinner. Then head to Air Papan to rest. Since most in the group are not familiar or seasoned with the road conditions there. Do take due care when riding. Roads are uneven at times. but no potholes.

Let's make this ride a successful one without any hiccups and breakdown. City-riding and country-riding is 2 totally different sets of skills. But the basics in riding is similar.

Looking forward to it!

Mishaps and Mamas

Another successful outing! Well...almost. What was supposed to have been a pleasant 10pm supper meeting at the Makansutra-acclaimed Casuarina Curry became a night of bad bad service which started an hour later than
scheduled at 11pm.

Well, it was nobody's fault that it started at 11pm. Poor KK's gear cable snapped just as he was leaving his carpark. So suay. Luckily for him, Vespa buddies Rae, HF and Maz were there to help him and give him moral and technical support he badly needed. Meanwhile, CY, Red and Ash discussed how Doctorate holders got their titles and managed to down their 5th Teh Cino (respectively) while waiting for their fellow riders to arrive from Sengkang.

To cut a long story short, here's the list of problems encountered.
  1. Ash's thosai masala got squashed by dirty trays when the mama waiter was clearing them...NOT! He left the whole stack there after realising that Ash hadn't finished his food without a word of apology. Why didn't he clear them? We will never know... (Strike #1)
  2. HF's order list was casually waved away by another mama waiter with a "Vait ah..." And vait we did...We managed to order our food, but they never came. (Strike #2)
  3. Well, we would consider this to be the restaurant's problem, not so much of ours. We finally left the place with a bad impression, with some of us swearing never to set a foot there again...but of course, we paid them what they deserved before leaving (HOMERUN!!!!!).
  4. Huifen dropped her bike keys INTO THE SEA! Maz braved the steep cliff and the darkness to help her retrieve them. Lucky we got kampong boy Maz. And Cheezels.
  5. Ant invasion!!!! We carelessly parked our bikes right into the warpath of ants who didn't hesitate to let us know that the parking lot belonged to them.

Here are some pictures from that eventful night. First outing in the series of KUNs (Know Ur N'hood). This time, we explored the far north. WOODLANDS, MARSILING and SEMBAWANG.
Special mention goes out to our two-time hero for the night MAZ, who managed to save HF and KK's asses.

Ant attack!!! At Sembawang Park.
The pesky little things made starting our bikes a jumpy affair.

HF being ambushed in the toilet.
No one escapes Ash's lens.

Kampong Boy Maz the hero!!!
Braving the steep cliff and the darkness to retrieve HF's keys.
Note Geomancer KK's throwing of his Cheezels into the darkness  to help locate the keys.

Our Vespas lined up against the beautiful JB skyline.
See the Causeway in the background?

To those who missed this outing, look forward to the next one, ok? It's the long-awaited Mersing trip next. Kudos to Maz and Red who sacrificed valuable time and risked life and limb by venturing into notorious JB to do a recce on the group's behalf.

Ash: I may have taken a few liberties with the actual details of certain events. But...what the heck!!!  I know you, you know, we happy lah.
